if scripts get minor updates in a forest, will anyone know to download them? or something…

wow, has it been over a year? day job must be keeping me busy. to break the silence, here are some updated scripts i just posted:

rd_CompSetter (v2.5): individual control over settings. added width, height, and PAR control.
rd_CompMBSetter (v1.1): in AE CS5 or later, you can control samples per frame and adaptive sample limit.
rd_ScriptLauncher (v2.5): fixed listbox text color in AE CS5. filtered out script itself from appearing in the list.

if you haven’t read/heard on the wire, some of my more popular scripts are now also available on lloyd alvarez’s aescripts.com site as part of its relaunch. you can still download them and others here (for the foreseeable future), but i wanted to make it easier for AE users to “shop” for some of my favorites along with those from other script authors, and lloyd was kind enough to expand the focus of his site.

so why purchase a script from aescripts.com when you can download it here for free? convenience, and to show your support for them. i don’t expect to retire from contributions. in fact, i’m hoping to donate my portion of the proceeds to some of my favorite charities (the leukemia & lymphoma society, american diabetes association, the nature conservancy — ones i already suggest with my rd: Donate script) or those in my local community doing good deeds.

do consider checking out aescripts.com and the quality of its offerings. lloyd’s Immigration script is killer! paul tuersley’s EffectSearch is super-handy, too. these and the other authors have spent a lot of free time developing their scripts, so do consider supporting their efforts.

so where does that leave redefinery.com? no changes right now. i might include more scripts on aescripts.com at some point, but you can still download earlier versions and the more techny scripts here. also, the reference material isn’t going away.

after effects cs4 9.0.2 now available

the 9.0.2 update for after effects cs4 is now available. choose help > updates from within the app. more info at my colleague’s blog.

for mac users of my scripts, the crash on quit when a dockable panel (ScriptUI Panels) script was open at startup or opened during the session has been fixed. the update has lots of other stability improvements for all users.

another new one in the lab is rd: Approximate, for batch setting and unsetting proxies for footage or comp items. you can set an item to a still, movie, file, or placeholder. as usual, feel free to leave your feedback (input, requests, bug reports, etc.) in the comments.

if you’re a mac user of after effects cs4 (9.0 or 9.0.1), and have noticed a crash on quit, be aware of a known issue with scripts that open dockable panels (a.k.a., ScriptUI panels, or scripts installed in the Scripts/ScriptUI Panels folder and accessed via the Window menu). if ScriptUI panels are open after starting the app (that is, they were saved as part of a workpace) or upon quitting the app, after effects cs4 will crash on quit. no data is lost, just that the app isn’t quitting correctly. more info in support technote kb408103.

the team is aware of the issue and is investigating possible solutions. unfortunately, one couldn’t make it into 9.0.1, but that update does have some important updates (choose Help > Updates to get 9.0.1). as a workaround, close all ScriptUI panels before quitting, or run a script from the File > Scripts submenu or one of the script launchers out there (rd: Script Launcher or Launch Pad). windows users and users of ae cs3 are not affected.

also, in general, if you do encounter a crash with after effects cs4, please consider submitting a crash report using the Adobe Crash Reporter. (additional details about After Effects and Adobe Crash Reporter)

updated studio techniques for cs4

Mark Christiansen‘s Adobe After Effects CS4 Visual Effects and Compositing Studio Techniques book, to which i contributed a Scripting appendix (on the DVD), is now available. the appendix contains an overview of After Effects scripting, breakdowns of three scripts (trim layers to zero opacity, render slates from tab-delimited text, apply light wrap using the recipe from mark’s book), a script to set up the camera projection technique covered in the book, and small updates to the existing Duplink and Merge Projects scripts. be sure to check out contributions from dan ebberts, the man when it comes to expressions, and lloyd alvarez, who continues to crank out awesome scripts, on the DVD.

with After Effects CS4 now available, here’s my plan for CS4 updates to various scripts:

additional scripts on the Adobe Exchange (for the day job): now available… Additional Scripts for After Effects CS4. these are just small updates, with no new scripts at this time.
redefinery scripts (on this site): existing ones should work in CS4. however, i want to create CS4-specific versions that take advantage of the triple-quote support, remove the reliance on the graphics override for edittext and other controls, use new controls (as appropriate), and implement as many feature requests as possible. work is scheduled to start in november, with release in batches thereafter.
scripts available on mark’s & stu’s book dvds: the existing ones should work in CS4. as for other stuff, i’ll cover that in a future post.
